Vietnamese American Civic Association, Inc.

Founded in 1984 by Vietnamese refugees, the Vietnamese American Civic Association, Inc. aims to promote and support family self-sufficiency and well-being, and to facilitate community empowerment amongst the Vietnamese population of Boston and Greater Boston. VACA was established through the efforts of five Vietnamese men and women, who were alarmed by the anti-Asian attacks on refugees living in Boston and believed it was essential to educate the larger community about the growing Vietnamese community in Boston, as well as to provide services to make resettlement an effortless process for newly arrived refugees from Vietnam.

Our Mission

VACA’s mission is to promote family self-sufficiency and well-being, and to facilitate community empowerment among the Vietnamese community of Boston and Greater Boston.

Over the past 30 years, VACA has worked with our constituents to develop a wide array of services to help Vietnamese individuals and families realize economic stability, social integration, and a successful transition to the United States. Currently our service include : Social Direct service, English to Speakers of other language, Civic and Citizenship classes, health education and outreach, youth programing, and Housing counselling program.

Our Founder

Thuan Tran is a visionary entrepreneur and a bilingual English/Vietnamese speaking development specialist with extensive expertise in sustainable development.

With over a decade of experience in the field, she has a comprehensive knowledge of social resources and immigration services. She is committed to empowerment for Vietnamese individuals and families, and has a proven track record of success as a result-driven social service specialist.

Thuan earned her Master’s degree in Sustainable International Development from the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. Her relevant coursework includes capacity building, aligning policy and practice in development, and responsible leadership. As a faculty assistant, Thuan guided and supported first-year students in their academic and personal growth.

She has conducted intake and needs assessments for clients and provided assistance with social matters such as immigration, health insurance, social security, and housing applications. Thuan has also consulted with clients and their families on how to create a supportive environment to overcome matters that affect their lives, advocated for clients and their families, and developed resources and service handbooks to help with the referral process.
